Attore statunitense. Esordisce nel cinema nel 1921 (White Hands) e viene lanciato come protagonista da J. Ford in Il cavallo d'acciaio (1924) che gli procura un immediato successo. Il suo fisico atletico lo rende particolarmente adatto a ruoli in film d'avventura e western, che interpreta con inconsueta umanità e finezza. Feconda è la sua collaborazione con Ford: La nipote parigina (1925), Battaglia di giganti (1926), La grande sfida (1929), Il massacro di Fort Apache (1948), Il grande sentiero (1964). Tra le altre prove: Aurora (1927) di F.W. Murnau, L'arca di Noè (1928), L'occidente d'oro (1932).
